ABSTRACT
The benefit of web based quality control of paediatric cataract surgery
Purpose
To disseminate the information about a web-based register for long-time follow-up of patients operated on for paediatric cataract.
Methods
A web-based system for follow-up of children operated for paediatric cataract at the age < 8 years has been developed in association with EyeNet, the Swedish national centre of competence within the field of quality registries.
Results
The system is available in both Swedish and English. It is in use in Sweden and Denmark. A total of 109 patients are registered of which 41 children (with 62 eyes) were under the age of one and in 35 children bilateral operation has been performed.
Conclusions
Careful follow-up of operations and outcome of surgery for paediatric cataract is of huge value for improvement of the procedure. The disorder is unusual and collaboration between different centres is important to achieve a sufficient number of cases for comparison and analysis. The register presented offers excellent possibilities for collaboration.
