Botulinum Toxin treatment for traumatic sixth nerve palsy .
Aim of this study is to investigate the benefits of botulinum toxin injection for sixth nerve palsy, caused by head- trauma.
We retrospectively reviewed 11 patients (between 1999-2006) who were treated , with a single injection to the medial rectus muscle , in various timing since the onset of the palsy. We devided the patients in two groups according to the time of treatment. Early treatment group < 6 months and Late treatment group = > 6 months. Patients with previous squint, squint surgery or earlier botulinum toxin treatment were excluded.
Eight out of 11 patients recovered fully (recovery was defined as less than 10 prism diopters of deviation or no diplopia, in primary position ). In the remaining 3 patients surgery was necessary to regain binocular single vision.
Our retrospective , observational study has no control group. Although the botulinum toxin treatment could have masked a spontaneous recovery in some of the patients in the early group, it appeared to be beneficial for the chronic palsies. Data from our study will be discussed.
