ABSTRACT
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the few causes of childhood blindness that in many cases can be prevented. That requires an efficient screening organization to be able to detect and treat ROP at an adequate time.
In Sweden a national register for ROP has recently been established. A steering group with representatives of the six major regions of the country has been created. We collaborate with a national perinatal quality register. The ROP register is webbased and data input will be performed by the ophthalmologist in charge of the screened infant. The aim is to include all infants in Sweden screened for ROP.
The major purpose of the register is to improve the quality of screening for ROP. Such a register will also enable us to study the incidence of ROP, on a national and regional basis, the natural history of ROP, risk factors for ROP, treatment outcome etc.
We believe that a national register on ROP will improve the knowledge of the disease and create a basis for continuous modification of the screening programme. SWEDROP was started in September 2006. We present information on creating the register and we also show some of the first results of the register.
